To connect the PAA2 to your PC:

1. Purchase a USB to Serial Adaptor. There are a variety of such adaptors available, and each one has its own default com port settings. It’s important to keep this in mind when setting up the PAA2.
2. Follow the set up instructions outlined by the instruction manual included with your USB to Serial Adaptor. This will generally involve plugging the PAA2 into the serial adaptor (via the RS232 port) and plugging the USB side into the computer.
3. After installing the adaptor, find out what COM port the adaptor’s default setting is (this depends on the brand of adaptor you have purchased). Do this through the Control Panel>System Information>Hardware tab. By clicking the Details button, you can then check the communication devices tab and determine the USB Serial port designation (COM2, COM3, and so on).
4. Install the Phonic PAA2 software using the CD-ROM that accompanies the PAA2, and run the setup file for your Operating System (Windows XP, 2000, ME or 98). You must make sure the PAA2 software can recognize the PAA2 for the software to work properly!

Troubleshooting: What to do when the software does not recognize your PAA2?

First Solution

It is possible to alter the COM port that the USB to Serial Adaptor is designated, by right clicking the name, and then clicking Properties. At Properties, click on the Port Settings tab, followed by the Advanced button, which will give you a new window that will allow you to designate your USB to Serial Adaptor to COM1, making the PAA2 easily recognizable to the software. If, however, COM1 is in use, you should just keep the default setting and try next solution. If, however, you can designate the adaptor to COM1, do not proceed to the next solution.

Second Solution

Open a new Notepad document and simply write the number of your USB to Serial Adaptor’s COM port, minus one (i.e. if your USB to Serial Adaptor using COM3, then simply type 2; if it uses COM4, simply type 3 and so on). After typing that single number, save the file as PAA2.inf and place it in the c:Program FilesPAA2 folder (or the PAA2 software installation folder).

Open the PAA2 software. Click on the options menu, and select “Port.” Select the port number and click TEST. If your PAA2 is connected to the USB to Serial Adaptor correctly, this should go by without any problems. You can then select the FILE menu and click “In Line” to finish your installation. (Please note: you may have to do a Port test each time you open the PAA2 software).
